There are five key requirements for a successful residential recycling system to function effectively in the U.S., according to The Recycling Partnership. In its 2024 State of Recycling Report, the Recycling Partnership identifies the following as essential:
- Packaging Recyclability
- Recycling Access
- Community Recycling Engagement
- Processing and Sorting
- End Markets
All five requirements rely on the others for success. The study found that approximately 21% of household recyclable material was recycled, 3% was lost during processing at MRFs, and the remaining 76% was lost to the household trash. These numbers make clear the importance of community access to and engagement with recycling.
Quoting from the report, “Currently, just 43% of households participate in recycling. Of those who have access, 59% use their recycling service. Of those that do, only 57% of recyclable material is put in recycling containers. This means many households do not participate to the fullest extent possible. In an effective system, at least 90% of households would participate. This underscores the need for investment in communication, outreach, and support.”
Keeping communication open and offering outreach and support to residents is key to effective recycling programs. Eco Partners can help you develop clear and concise messages for all your solid waste programs. Please give us a call.
