Recycling the right way helps protect the environment and keeps your local recycling program running smoothly. Here are some important reminders to help you avoid common recycling mistakes.

- Close the Lid – Always close the lids on curbside carts to prevent wind-blown litter and to keep pests away.
- Bag Your Trash – All waste placed in the waste cart should be securely bagged. This also helps keep carts clean.
- Keep Recyclables Loose – Place recyclables directly into the cart. Never bag recyclables, as bagged materials cannot be sorted properly at the facility.
- Recycle Right – Only place accepted recyclables into the recycling cart. If you are not sure a bout an item, check with your local solid waste authority for guidance.
- Flatten Boxes – Break down cardboard boxes before recycling. If needed, cut them into smaller pieces so they fit inside the cart.
- Empty, Clean, and Dry – Rinse or wipe food and beverage containers and allow them to dry before placing them in the recycling cart.
- Know What Not to Throw – Keep these items out of your recycling cart: plastic bags, food, coffee cups, clothing and textiles, hoses, cords, tissues, napkins, paper towels, batteries, and paint. For the full list of “what not to recycle,” contact your recycling provider or solid waste management authority.
Some materials may look recyclable, but aren’t. It is important to know which materials are accepted at the curb for recycling in your community and which are not included.
