Hosting a holiday party? Make it low-waste!

Whether it’s cozy and casual with cookies and cocoa, or elegant and fancy with several courses and crystal, your holiday party doesn’t have to be wasteful, expensive, and stressful.

Here are some tips for lower-waste holiday celebrations:

• Use washable plates, cups, silverware, dishes, napkins, and tablecloths. (Disposable supplies get expensive and are generally not reusable or recyclable.)

• Provide bins for bottles and cans during holiday parties. Recycle non-metallic wrapping paper and holiday cards, too.

• Share the leftovers. Divide up the leftovers into containers and send some of them home with your guests.

• If you give gifts to your guests, select low-waste gifts, such as tickets to a concert, sporting event, or play; a movie gift card; a museum membership; or park passes. Another option is to give food, such as a tasty treat that can be enjoyed by all during the holiday season.
